Maxine Waters, 15 House Democrats <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/democrats-financialservices.house.gov\/uploadedfiles\/05.22.2025_final_rm_cmw_cb.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">introduced<\/a> the \u201cStop Trading, Retention, and Unfair Market Payoffs in Crypto Act of 2025.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The bill would prohibit the president, vice president, members of Congress, and their immediate families from owning, promoting, or profiting from digital assets while in office.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers would also be barred from holding crypto assets in ways that allow them to exert unilateral control over the tokens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrump\u2019s crypto con is not just a scam to target investors,\u201d Waters said in a statement. \u201cIt\u2019s also a dangerous backdoor for selling influence over American policies to the highest foreign bidder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The legislation arrives amid a wave of criticism surrounding Trump\u2019s deepening ties to crypto. The president and his wife, Melania, recently launched personal memecoins.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s family has also backed a stablecoin through the crypto firm World Liberty Financial, and his sons are linked to a Bitcoin mining venture.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Blockchain records indicate that Justin Sun, founder of Tron and a Chinese national, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/05\/20\/justin-sun-trump-dinner.html\" target=\"_blank\">is one of the largest holders<\/a> of TRUMP (TRUMP) \u2014 the memecoin that serves as a ticket to Thursday night\u2019s dinner.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- .cn-block-related-link --><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Protests outside the gala<\/h2>\n<p>The exclusive gala, hosted at Trump\u2019s golf club in Virginia, invites the top 220 $TRUMP holders \u2014 some of whom spent between $55,000 and nearly $38 million in tokens to secure an invitation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Critics, including Sen. Richard Blumenthal, accuse Trump of \u201cauctioning\u201d access to the White House and potentially violating the Constitution\u2019s ban on foreign gifts.<\/p>\n<p>Protests are happening outside the event. Senators Chris Murphy, Elizabeth Warren, and Jeff Merkley, along with Rep. Sam Liccardo and advocacy groups, are calling out Donald Trump\u2019s upcoming \u201cmeme coin\u201d fundraising dinner as a threat to national security and a potential corruption risk, according to a note shared with crypto.news.<\/p>\n<p>At a press conference today, the group demanded the release of attendee names and any promised favors.
