{"id":2711,"date":"2025-06-12T13:33:08","date_gmt":"2025-06-12T13:33:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bitunikey.com\/news\/crypto-is-near-a-tipping-point-fsb-chair-warns\/"},"modified":"2025-06-12T13:33:09","modified_gmt":"2025-06-12T13:33:09","slug":"crypto-is-near-a-tipping-point-fsb-chair-warns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bitunikey.com\/news\/crypto-is-near-a-tipping-point-fsb-chair-warns\/","title":{"rendered":"Crypto is near a \u2018tipping point,\u2019 FSB chair warns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"post-detail__content blocks\">\n<p class=\"is-style-lead\">Outgoing Financial Stability Board Chair Klaas Knot has warned that crypto may pose a threat to global financial stability, citing growing connections between crypto and traditional finance.<\/p>\n<p>The FSB has long maintained that \u201ccrypto does not yet pose a systemic risk, but recent developments suggest we may be approaching a tipping point,\u201d Knot <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dnb.nl\/en\/general-news\/speech-2025\/how-is-the-water-continuing-our-work-to-preserve-financial-stability\/\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> while speaking in Madrid on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed to the role of stablecoins in linking the two financial systems. \u201cStablecoin issuers, for example, now hold substantial amounts of U.S. Treasuries. This is a segment we must monitor closely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- .cn-block-related-link --><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Retail traders access to crypto<\/h2>\n<p>Knot also flagged the rapid growth in retail crypto access via exchange-traded funds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBarriers for retail users have dropped significantly, particularly with the introduction of crypto ETFs. The interlinkages with the traditional financial system continue to grow,\u201dKnot said.<\/p>\n<p>While noting that crypto\u2019s rise has been driven in part by inefficiencies in cross-border payments, Knot emphasized the need for appropriate regulation. \u201cThe crypto ecosystem will continue to evolve \u2014 and so must our regulatory frameworks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said jurisdictions are actively developing rules, and that \u201cthe FSB\u2019s recommendations offer a common foundation. This is especially important given the inherently cross-border nature of crypto.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Knot also discussed parallel concerns with climate change and the financial sector\u2019s preparedness.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But he ended by underscoring the importance of global coordination across all areas: \u201cFinancial stability is an international public good. Every single issue I have mentioned today \u2014 NBFI, banking, crypto, payments, climate \u2014 they all cross borders. And so must our response be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Knot\u2019s term at the FSB <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fsb.org\/2025\/04\/financial-stability-board-nominates-andrew-bailey-to-serve-as-its-next-chair\/#:~:text=The%20Nomination%20Committee%20for%20the,meets%20in%20person%20in%20June.\" target=\"_blank\">ends<\/a> June 30.
