That tweet was in a debate with Ian Grigg, who argued that blockchains\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 vitalik.eth (@VitalikButerin) <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VitalikButerin\/status\/2015599527370293422?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">January 26, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"from-griggs-minimalist-chain-to-merkle-roots\">From Grigg\u2019s minimalist chain to Merkle roots<\/h2>\n<p>Buterin\u2019s original position emerged in a 2017 clash with financial cryptographer Ian Grigg, who argued that blockchains should \u201ctrack the order of transactions, but not the state (eg. user balances, smart contract code and storage).\u201d In Grigg\u2019s model, \u201cthe messages are logged, but the state (e.g., UTXO) is implied, which means it is constructed by the computer internally, and then (can be) thrown away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- .cn-block-related-link --><\/p>\n<p>Buterin says he opposed that philosophy because it forces users either to \u201crun a node that processed every transaction in all of history, or trust someone else.\u201d Instead, Ethereum commits state directly in block headers so \u201cyou can simply prove any value in the state with a Merkle branch,\u201d under an honest\u2011majority assumption where \u201cif &gt;= 50% of the consensus participants are honest, then the chain with the most PoW (or PoS) support will be valid.\u201d<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/VitalikButerin\/status\/2015599527370293422\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"zksnarks-as-the-missing-pill\">ZK\u2011SNARKs as the missing \u201cpill\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>What changed, in his telling, is the maturation of ZK\u2011SNARKs. \u201cWe now have a technology that lets you verify the correctness of the chain, without literally re-executing every transaction,\u201d Buterin wrote. \u201cWE INVENTED THE THING THAT GETS YOU THE BENEFITS WITHOUT THE COSTS!\u201d He likens this to \u201ca clearly working pill that anyone could make for $15 that cured all diseases,\u201d arguing that if such a pill existed, \u201chealthcare becomes super affordable so everyone is happy.\u201d<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dailycoin.com\/vitalik-revisits-bitcoins-block-size-war-backs-technology\/\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Zero\u2011knowledge systems already underpin zk\u2011rollups that compress transaction data and offload computation while preserving verifiability, allowing millions of computation steps to be checked \u201cin a very fast way\u201d without redoing the work. For Buterin, this eliminates much of the old block\u2011size tradeoff: scalability no longer has to mean blind trust in intermediaries.<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mikkoikola.com\/blog\/2023\/1\/9\/exploring-ethereum-scalability-what-are-zero-knowledge-proofs-and-zkevm\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mountain-mans-cabin-as-systemic-batna\">\u201cMountain Man\u2019s cabin\u201d as systemic BATNA<\/h2>\n<p>Equally important is a shift from academic models to messy reality. \u201cIn the real world, lots of things break,\u201d he concedes, listing p2p outages, latency spikes \u201cfrom its usual ~200ms to 1000\u20135000ms,\u201d centralized staking, and censorship, including Tornado Cash, where \u201cyour\u00a0<em>only<\/em>\u00a0option becomes to directly use the chain.\u201d In that world, \u201cTHE ANSWER TO THE ABOVE CONUNDRUMS CANNOT ALWAYS BE \u2018CALL THE DEVS\u2019,\u201d he warns, arguing that developers themselves risk becoming a central point of control.<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kucoin.com\/news\/flash\/vitalik-buterin-reverses-2017-blockchain-verification-view\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Instead, Buterin reframes the \u201cMountain Man\u2019s cabin\u201d as a BATNA \u2013 a \u201cBest Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement\u201d \u2013 that users may rarely inhabit but must know exists. \u201cWe do not need to start living every day in the Mountain Man\u2019s cabin,\u201d he writes. \u201cBut part of maintaining the infinite garden of Ethereum is certainly keeping the cabin well-maintained.\u201d<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoadventure.com\/heres-why-the-ethereum-fallback-vitalik-buterin-once-rejected-is-back-on-the-table\/\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"market-snapshot-crypto-reacts-in-a-maturing-landsc\">Market snapshot: crypto reacts in a maturing landscape<\/h2>\n<p>Buterin\u2019s rethink lands in a market that continues to price Ethereum as critical settlement infrastructure.
