These were three qualities previously considered impossible to achieve simultaneously.<\/p>\n<p>Buterin expects higher non-ZK-EVM gas limits and the emergence of ZK-EVM nodes starting in 2026. ZK-EVMs will become the primary block validation method between 2027 and 2030, while distributed block building remains a long-term goal to reduce centralization risk and improve geographic fairness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are not minor improvements; they are shifting Ethereum into being a fundamentally new and more powerful kind of decentralized network,\u201d Buterin wrote on X.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- .cn-block-related-link --><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Live code breaks Ethereum bandwidth constraints<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Buterin framed the achievement by comparing Ethereum to previous peer-to-peer networks. BitTorrent launched in 2000 with huge total bandwidth and high decentralization but lacked consensus mechanisms.<\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin introduced consensus and decentralization in 2009 but maintained low bandwidth through replicated rather than distributed work.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Now that ZKEVMs are at alpha stage (production-quality performance, remaining work is safety) and PeerDAS is live on mainnet, it&#8217;s time to talk more about what this combination means for Ethereum.<\/p>\n<p>These are not minor improvements; they are shifting Ethereum into being a\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 vitalik.eth (@VitalikButerin) <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VitalikButerin\/status\/2007559523528233041?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">January 3, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cNow, Ethereum with PeerDAS (2025) and ZK-EVMs (expect small portions of the network using it in 2026), we get: decentralized, consensus and high bandwidth,\u201d Buterin stated. \u201cThe trilemma has been solved \u2013 not on paper, but with live running code.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>PeerDAS is running on mainnet today. ZK-EVMs have reached production-quality performance with remaining work focused on safety rather than capability. The technology took years to develop, with ZK-EVM attempts starting around 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Buterin shared a four-year rollout timeline. In 2026, large non-ZK-EVM-dependent gas limit increases will arrive through Bandwidth Allocation Limits (BALs) and enshrined Proposer-Builder Separation (ePBS). The first opportunities to run ZK-EVM nodes will emerge during this period.<\/p>\n<p>Between 2026 and 2028, Ethereum will implement gas repricings, changes to state structure, and move execution payloads into blobs. These adjustments make higher gas limits safe to deploy.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- .cn-block-related-link --><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Distributed building targets geographic fairness<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>From 2027 to 2030, large gas limit increases will roll out as ZK-EVM validation becomes the network\u2019s primary method for block validation. <\/p>\n<p>Buterin <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/VitalikButerin\/status\/2006737662942871574\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">described<\/a> distributed block building as a \u201clong-term ideal holy grail\u201d where the full block is never constituted in a single place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven before that point, we want the meaningful authority in block building to be as distributed as possible,\u201d he wrote.
