The Dow rose 0.13% on the day, and the Nasdaq slipped 0.3%, despite briefly falling over 1.6% earlier in the session.<\/p>\n<p>For the month, the tech-heavy Nasdaq surged nearly 10% as technology shares continued to drive momentum. The Dow added 4%. Friday\u2019s subdued finish followed reports of expanding U.S. tech restrictions on China and renewed trade tensions.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-05-30\/us-plans-wider-china-tech-sanctions-with-subsidiary-crackdown\" target=\"_blank\"> plans to<\/a> tighten export rules targeting subsidiaries of firms already on the Entity List, Bloomberg reported. That news came hours after former President Trump accused China of violating its existing trade deal on social media.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-05-29\/bessent-says-a-trump-xi-call-could-help-as-talks-a-bit-stalled\" target=\"_blank\">said talks<\/a> with China are \u201cstalled\u201d and suggested a Trump-Xi call is needed to advance negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- .cn-block-related-link --><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trump\u2019s tariff uncertainty\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, legal uncertainty surrounding tariffs added to investor anxiety. A U.S. appeals court temporarily allowed Trump-era tariffs to remain in place, reversing a trade court\u2019s earlier decision.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The administration <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/international\/global-trends\/trump-administration-weighs-15-tariffs-for-150-days-under-existing-law-report\/articleshow\/121501620.cms?from=mdr\" target=\"_blank\">is also weighing<\/a> a 15% duty for up to 150 days under the Trade Act of 1974.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the geopolitical and legal headwinds, investors found optimism in cooling inflation. The Fed\u2019s preferred inflation gauge\u2014the core Personal Consumption Expenditures index\u2014rose in line with forecasts in April, helping temper fears of further rate hikes.<\/p>\n<p>Health care was the only S&amp;P 500 sector to post a monthly loss, down nearly 6%.
