But now Chinese regulators, including the People\u2019s Bank of China and the Cyberspace Administration of China, have advised against participation in the initial stablecoin rollout.<\/p>\n<p>PBoC officials expressed concerns about allowing tech groups and brokerages to issue any currency.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- .cn-block-related-link --><\/p>\n<p>The central bank reportedly expressed concern about whether private companies should have \u201cthe ultimate right of coinage,\u201d <\/p>\n<p>This caution contrasts with the earlier enthusiasm of some Chinese officials, who viewed renminbi-denominated stablecoins as a strategic response to U.S. dollar dominance.<\/p>\n<p>In June, former Vice Minister of Finance Zhu Guangyao stated that the United States promotes stablecoins to maintain the dollar\u2019s global dominance.<\/p>\n<p>He also suggested that China utilize Hong Kong\u2019s pilot programs and emphasized that a renminbi-based stablecoin should be incorporated into the country\u2019s national financial strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Interest in the Hong Kong program had surged over the summer. Officials also suggested that renminbi stablecoins could boost the yuan\u2019s international use.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- .cn-block-related-link --><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Risk assessment outweighs payment innovation benefits<\/h3>\n<p>Former PBoC Governor Zhou Xiaochuan has warned about the need for vigilance against stablecoins being excessively used for asset speculation, noting that misdirection could lead to fraud and financial system instability.<\/p>\n<p>He called for careful assessment of tokenization\u2019s actual demand as a technological foundation.<\/p>\n<p>The former governor questioned the potential of stablecoins for payments, stating that \u201cthere is little room to cut costs in the current system, particularly in retail payments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Hong Kong Monetary Authority began accepting applications from stablecoin issuers in August.
