{"id":1060,"date":"2025-05-27T13:18:40","date_gmt":"2025-05-27T13:18:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bitunikey.com\/news\/crypto-exchanges-still-post-high-risks-of-money-laundering-luxembourg-says\/"},"modified":"2025-05-27T13:18:40","modified_gmt":"2025-05-27T13:18:40","slug":"crypto-exchanges-still-post-high-risks-of-money-laundering-luxembourg-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bitunikey.com\/news\/crypto-exchanges-still-post-high-risks-of-money-laundering-luxembourg-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Crypto exchanges still post high risks of money laundering, Luxembourg says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"post-detail__content blocks\">\n<p class=\"is-style-lead\">Despite a drop in trading volumes, Luxembourg authorities warn that crypto exchanges remain a significant money laundering concern due to their online operations and international reach.<\/p>\n<p>Crypto exchanges continue to carry high risks of money laundering, according to Luxembourg\u2019s latest National Risk Assessment, which warns that the risks remain elevated despite a drop in transaction volumes over the past two years.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2025 <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gouvernement.lu\/dam-assets\/images-documents\/actualites\/2025\/05\/26-evaluation-risque-blanchiment\/2025-nra-vsite-internet.pdf?data=329crypto114news023\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a>, Luxembourg writes that the inherent risk of crypto businesses remains \u201chigh,\u201d with the main drivers being \u201cvolume of clients\/transactions and distribution channels, followed by size, ownership\/legal structure, products\/activities and the international nature of the business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, the use of crypto, especially with regard to investment fraud, \u201chas become more prevalent,\u201d adding further that the surge in fraud is linked to \u201cthe increase in value of certain crypto assets and growing media attention around crypto investments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- .cn-block-related-link --><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe involvement of non-compliant crypto service providers with insufficient levels of KYC in offshore jurisdictions remains one of the main challenges in many cryptocurrency investigations as they often give rise to lengthy MLA procedures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Luxembourg\u2019s NRA report<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Luxembourg-registered crypto exchanges processed 30.2 million transactions worth \u20ac106.8 billion in 2021, the data shows. But that figure fell to 19.7 million transactions worth \u20ac22.6 billion in 2023 amid declining market activity and heightened regulatory scrutiny.
